Scripture Thoughts #5
Genesis 18
In Genesis 18, God told Abraham that one year from that moment, Sarah would have a child.
They had already been prepared for this moment by God years before, when He first promised a lineage to Abraham.
Sarah overheard their conversation, and laughed at the idea of being pregnant in her old age. God, of course, knew what she did, and confronted Abraham about it. He said, "Is anything too hard for the Lord?"
It's easy to judge Sarah for her continued lack of faith in God's promise to her. But it's also easy to judge for ourselves what is most logical or reasonable to expect. It's easy to put God's promises in a box, or even totally doubt them.
How often are we the Sarah in this story?
It reminded me of Peter denying Jesus 3 times, despite his bold and passionate loyalty. And yet, God used Peter as the rock upon which He built the church. And God also used Sarah as the well from which His nation would spring. God is often in the business of using the doubters and fearful to do great things.
