Scripture Thoughts #7
Genesis 24
In Genesis 24, when Isaac was old enough to get married, Abraham sent his most trusted servant to find a wife among his own people. Since Isaac would father the nation God promised to Abraham, he would need a wife fit for this mantle of responsibility.
Faith and trust in God is the bedrock of this story, from Abraham’s continued faith in God’s covenant to the nameless servant’s faith in God’s direction to Rebekah’s faith in a new, strange land.
Abraham didn’t take the convenient route of choosing a local Canaanite woman; he trusted in God to provide a wife fit for mothering God’s chosen people. The servant, likely afraid of letting down his master, trusted in God to lead him to the right young woman. Rebekah, no doubt intimidated by marrying a stranger, stepped out in faith.
God used the faith of a patriarch, a nameless servant, and a young woman to build a people. God is the God of kings and servants, and everyone in between. Your place or identity makes no difference to Him; all you need is faith to be used for great things.
